How I Use Microsoft Copilot To Curate The News
If you're like me, you like to get your daily news. It's nice to keep up with, and some of it is important.
The sheer volume of digital noise in today's media landscape has become overwhelming. For years, Google News was a reliable aggregator, but it has become increasingly unusable due to the proliferation of strict paywalls. With premier, fact-based outlets like Reuters, The New York Times, and The Economist restricting access, finding nonpartisan, high-quality information has never been more difficult.
Furthermore, the mainstream media is easily distracted. Sensationalized political theater frequently overshadows critical global events, such as the conflict in Iran, drawing public attention away from substantive journalism. Social media offers no refuge either; platforms like Facebook are flooded with misinformation, even regarding apolitical topics like sports.
Compounding these issues is the severely degraded user experience of the modern web. Many news sites are now dominated by intrusive advertisements, pop-ups, subscription prompts, and cookie consent banners, making the simple act of reading an article a tedious chore.
While communities like Reddit offer an alternative, they function more as forums for public sentiment rather than structured news sources.
Ultimately, navigating this ecosystem has driven me, like many others, to turn to AI as a cleaner, more efficient tool for information retrieval.
Copilot To Curate The News
I made a Copilot Agent to curate the news for me. I've been tweaking this prompt on and off for a couple of days, but I think it's almost 100%.
It's specific to my news. For example, I follow Microsoft, Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft 365 pretty closely, so those are sections in my news curation prompt.
I don't follow any sports. I'm a big Phillies fan, but I don't mind getting that news from TikTok, MLB, and Reddit.
How To Build A Free Copilot Agent
First, you need a Microsoft 365 license that includes the low-cost version of Microsoft Copilot.
- Go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/
- Click New Agent.
- Click Skip to configure.
- Enter "Daily News Briefing" in the Describe your agent input box.
- Copy and paste the prompt in the section "AI News Curation Prompt" below to the Instructions textbox.
- Click Create.
How To Use The Copilot News Curation Agent
To use it, simply open the agent in your browser and ask it for the daily news.
You can be more specific, for example, "Give me a daily news brief covering the most important stories from the last 24 hours."
Copilot will automatically generate links to the supporting articles for you to learn more.
You can follow up with "Tell me more about TOPIC_X" to give more details about an article.
