Act as a... PROFESSIONAL

Here's another great way to utilize Copilot. This one has honestly saved me thousands of dollars, so I don't have to hire experts.

Ask it to act like a BLANK. Then Ask it questions. For example, I would love to transition from IT consultant to Product Manager but typically product managers come from a sales background so it's not an easy transition so I might need some advice. You would think something like Act as a career coach. I'd like to transition to a product manager. What advice do you have? would work but I believe we can do better. In short, I want very personal steps like a career coach would give. I'd also prefer to see results from studies instead of "one guy on Reddit's experience" if possible. So here's a better prompt.

Here's an example prompt: I want you to act as a career coach. I'm currently an IT consultant at a medium sized organization. I'd like to make the move to a product manager. Can you help me get there? Please start by asking me questions to get my background so you can provide personal responses.

Then you can answer the questions and see your results. After you have one question answered you might have another. For example, now I'm curious about market research. That's something I've never done before so let's learn more. What would the person hiring/promoting me be looking for in my market research skills? I've never done anything like that. Can you provide some guidance?

Now that's the kind of information that's helpful. It's defined exactly what my future boss would be looking for in terms of market research. It's recommending how I can develop that skill and it's even providing courses I can take to learn more about market research.

So, what I would probably do with all this information is open a OneNote notebook and start taking massive amounts of notes. I'd create a section for each note Copilot has called out. Then I would research how to perform that task. Then I would perform that task and take notes in my OneNote.

Using Act as a is a great way to get expert help without hiring anyone. And sometimes simply typing "Act as a X" can be enough. For example, Act as a psychologist.
